In order to study the effects of slope on land use/land cover distribution and its dynamic change

taking Chang′an District of Xi′an City

Shaanxi Province as a case study area

classified the slope derived from the digital elevation model

and then a spatial overlay analysis has been done for slope map and land use map derived from remote sensing maps.The results showed that cultivated field

construction land

water mainly distributed in areas with slight slope

and woodland

grassland distribution on slope showed a normal distribution.The percentage of different land use types in same slope area was essentially same in different years while different land-use change existed in different slopes.The conversion of other land use types to construction land and the farmland mainly occurred in the slight slope area while the conversion to forest and grassland showed a normal distribution in the whole range of slope.The slope is an important factor to land use/land cover distribution and land use pattern.
